Glitch aesthetics in video games

Memory of a Broken Dimension is an exploration game that transports the player to an abstract, black and white world full of glitch imagery.  The game's aesthetic use of code and glitches is not only beautiful, but it also self-referentially draws attention to the computational processes beneath the game surface.  I think glitches can not only be intentionally used for aesthetic reasons, but for narrative purposes and to create interesting anomalies in gameplay as well.

More about glitch aesthetics here and here.

  1. A couple of years ago I got to see some film studies' presentations on glitch aesthetics. I think this approach of embracing technological failures is both really smart and often pretty cool-looking. I'm glad to see this art movement engage with the video game medium.

  2. This is actually really beautiful and a little creepy as well. I never knew that glitches in video games were used purposefully. This is evidence that video games can really be a terrific art form. I like that the use of a "mistake" can be so compelling and thought-provoking.

  3. This is actually really dope. I like it and I think this is the kind of thing that the visual effects artists do for those 8bit music festivals. I went to one and it was craaaazy! I definitely appreciate how this "mistake" is taken and reapplied and made acceptable as something entirely different. Really creative.
